Story & Atmosphere
Located in the heart of Mérida’s Centro district, Bengala Kaffeehaus is a small yet charming coffee shop that offers more than just a caffeine fix. Nestled close to Parque Santa Lucia, this quaint café stands out for its excellent Veracruz-sourced coffee and a warm, inviting atmosphere. Despite its modest size, Bengala Kaffeehaus manages to cultivate a serene space perfect for casual visits, quick work sessions with reliable Wi-Fi, or simply a quiet moment away from the busy plaza.
The coffee here is a true highlight. Whether you order a hot cappuccino, an iced honey latte, or a frappé on a hot Yucatan day, the quality and flavor reflect a genuine passion for the craft. The drinks consistently receive praise for being rich, well-balanced, and just the right temperature, making them a preferred choice over larger chains nearby. For those looking for an even more unique experience, the dulce de leche caramel coffee offers a sweet, indulgent twist that complements their savory offerings.
Speaking of food, Bengala Kaffeehaus doesn’t disappoint. The pizzandwich—thin, flaky bread paired with a flavorful sauce and tender ham and pepperoni—is frequently highlighted by patrons for its delicious, balanced taste. It’s light enough to enjoy without feeling overly full, showcasing how this café artfully blends bakery and coffee culture.
The interior may be modest, featuring just a couple of long tables with tall stools, but the space is thoughtfully air-conditioned and user-friendly, making it ideal for short visits or takeaway orders. Pricing remains very reasonable, which adds to the overall appeal for locals and visitors alike. While some might find the décor a bit simple, the focus here squarely rests on the quality of the coffee and the comfort of the experience.
Overall, Bengala Kaffeehaus captures the essence of Mérida’s vibrant café scene—a blend of traditional coffee sourcing, excellent local flavors, and a laid-back environment. It’s a fantastic spot to sip, savor, and soak in the nearby park’s charm. For anyone visiting or living in Centro, this coffee shop is a genuine gem worth discovering.
“ I was there on a weekday morning and was surprised that not a lot of people come in. The inside is small with wifi and a few outlets. The service was good. My overall takeaway is that I wasn't impressed but it wasn't bad. ”
“ A great small local coffee shop. And I do mean small; the inside of the shop is tiny but it is usually quite empty so that does not cause any problems. The coffee is very good, but it is perhaps better to order to go rather than to drink your coffee in the cafe—the only seating in the cafe is two long tables with tall immovable stools attached. The prices are very reasonable and they have lactose free milk available which is great if you are lactose intolerant like I am. ”
“ Great coffee shop right across from the Santa Lucia park. I tried a hot cappuccino and the iced honey latte. Both were excellent! ”
“ Ok coffee shop. Has a nice vibe going. Coffee ok, from Veracruz. Near plaza, so can wal around. They sell some pastries. You can sit inside and even do some laptop work. ”
“ This place is delicious. The pizzandwich is so yummy. The breading can come with or without herbs. It's flaky and thin so you don't get too full on bread. The sauce is flavorful with the perfect amount of red spread onto the bread. The ham and pepperoni is soft and moist enough to bite into without trying to gnaw at it like a dog biting a toy. The coffee I ordered was a dulce de leche caramel/carmelo hot coffee, it can be ordered cold as well. Presentation was appeasing to the eye and no extra sugar needed and usually I like my coffee sweet. There is Wi-Fi inside if needed. Light music plays in the back and there are some books you can read after you order and hang your bag on the little hooks provided next to your seat. ”
